Digital Offset Printing

Printing on Indigo digital offset printers provides a classy, professional look. Traditional offset printing works best with longer runs (at least 500 items, usually); Indigo printers are the option for short high-quality runs. All the same, this option is more expensive, more difficult to set up, and more time-consuming than color copying. Files must be provided in CMYK formats at 300 dpi or better resolution; an entire run must be done at once; and there is additional turn-around time and shipping cost. These prices are taken from Imagers.com, which did the printing for glossy flyers for City of Secrets. (They have an extensive automatic quote generator, so if you want more details than we offer here, feel free to explore their site for the exact sizes, shapes, and numbers you have in mind.)

Posters and Prints

Getting a good-looking poster out of an image file is sometimes trickier than it seems. You will need to start with a very large original file; expect at least 150dpi for printing, and calculate how large the file needs to be from that. CafePress offers this service, but we have been most impressed by the color fidelity, sharpness, and paper quality available from Zazzle.com. Like Cafepress, Zazzle prints on demand and mails directly to the orderer. The other great thing is that you can set up your product image once and then let the orderer choose any combination of size, paper quality, or framing his heart might desire.

We do not currently have our own Zazzle store, but authors could easily establish one for themselves (we'd be happy to link to you). The range of formats available through Zazzle is pretty considerable, but here are a few example prices:

Apparel

Here again there are options at both CafePress and Zazzle.com. Our experience with Zazzle has been that their products are a bit higher-quality. Like Cafepress, Zazzle prints on demand and mails directly to the orderer. The other great thing is that you can set up your product image once and then let the orderer choose any combination of color, size, and style.

Prices at Zazzle range from $15 for a basic t-shirt to $34 for a hooded sweatshirt, and the large selection of styles includes ladies' fitted shirts and infant clothing. There's also a choice of about a dozen possible background colors for many of these items, and of sizes from Youth S to Adult XXXXXL.

Non-standard Professionally Printed Items

Non-Paper Custom-printed Items

There are a number of companies out there that specialize in printing product logos or advertising slogans on t-shirts, balloons, pencils, stickers, "executive desk toys", toolkits, stress-relievers, slinkies, floor mats, pocket calculators, mouse pads, and just about every other small object known to man.

In many cases these products are either completely silly as feelie ideas, or else require a minimum run of 500-1000 items. In among those items, though, are the occasional ones that might in fact be the right thing for the right game. Some general places to look are premo-promos.com, Branders.com, and imprintstore.com.

CD Labelling, Packaging, and Reproduction

When planning a project involving CD labelling, remember to factor in the cost and time delay of ordering a sample (or a couple of samples) of your chosen design in order to make sure that it looks right, before ordering in bulk. Printing on a CD often looks different from printing the same file on paper. If you're willing to experiment, you can get something that looks pretty good, but some practice is likely necessary.
